Hello! Happy Hump day! How is “no poo/shamphree” life treating you?
I am so excited to share with you a no poo/shamphree friendly shampoo! It is the Skinchanted Peek-a-Poo No poo Method Alternative! It is made with all natural ingredients and contains no yucky parabens or silicones or pthalates. I have been using mine for a couple weeks now and I am in total and utter love!
I was sent the Original Formula (for fine to medium textured hair) and the Natural Hair (for ethinic hair or coarse hair) to try out. I first tried the Original formula. It is super runny, brown in color, and contains little specks through out the formula (soapnuts or shikakai powder) I just massaged a bit into my crown, used a little bit more and massaged it into the rest of my wet hair. I let it set in my hair for a while (I was not instructed to do so ) it doesn’t lather so in my mind I figured if I let it set, it would help clean! (perfect logic right?) Anyway, I rinsed with warm-ish water and then rinsed again with cold water. I did not use my apple cider rinse because I wanted to see what this bad boy could do on it’s own.
It cleaned my day 9 hair so wonderfully! My hair was super clean and fresh. It was bouncy and fluffy (the good fluff, not frizz, I’m talking volume!) and it was smooth. SMOOTH like I cheated with real shampoo or something! It made my hair feel so amazing. I didn’t apply my usual coconut oil on my ends either! My Tangle Teezer just glides through my hair when I used this. I love this product so much! This shampoo cleared up my dandruff. I take super hot showers ( bad I know but “can’t stop won’t stop”) and it has been drying out my scalp and giving me bad itchy dandruff. This shampoo cleared it up. I do not have dry flakes anymore!!! I love my other methods of washing, but this really takes the cake! I love it more than my bars…..dare I say it? I think I have found my Holy Grail no poo/shamphree shampoo!!!!
I used the Original formula every other day for a week. I wanted to use it and make sure it wasn’t a fluke! I wanted to wash with it on a regular basis and make sure it didn’t develope a weird residue, I also just WANTED to wash my hair with it. I loathe wash day, mostly I hate the whole waiting for my hair to dry, but with this shampoo I didn’t mind the wait because awesome hair was waiting for me!
I used the “Natural” hair formula this weekend and yesterday. It is for coarse hair for a reason, it is super moisturizing! It did weigh my hair down and made it look flat but my hair is super fine and normal SO of course this would not work for me…or could it? I took my Shamphree kit squirt bottle and added a tablespoon of the Natural hair formula shampoo and filled half the bottle with warm water. I applied this to my roots, massaged in, let it set it minute or two, and rinsed. My hair was so soft and shiny. It was not weighed down at all. My super dried and fried ends were super soft and silky! When diluted, the Natural formula really works well for my fine hair as a great moisturizing shampoo!
So it works great….but what is in it?
Soapnuts- Used for thousands of years as a detergent/soap/shampoo this is a plant native to India and Nepal but is found all over the world. The soap nut shell absorbs water and releases saponins which circulate as a natural surfactant in the water which cleanses oil, dirt, sweat, and dead skin from your scalp and hair. Soapnuts are not an actual nut, they are a berry so people with allergies, you do not have to proceed with caution!
Shikakai- Another plant from India, this plant’s leaves, bark, and pods can be ground into a powder to form a paste to clean your hair. It also contains saponins to gently remove dirt and oil from your hair. It is a great detangler and is used for an anti-dandruff treatment.
Aloe- Aloe juice is super moisturizing for your hair and does not weigh it down. It is used for a dandruff treatment, and it works as a mild astringent to prevent oily hair!
All three of these ingredients are in all the formulas!
Honeyquat- This is in the “Natural” hair formuala and is a great natural humecant. It is basically honey (it is derived from honey and is natural) it draws moisture from the air and keeps it locked in your hair!
Indian Goosebery- or Amla. This is in Rainbow formula (for gray or color treated hair). This is another awesome plant from India and Nepal. It is a small green berry and is high in Vitamin C. In these countries shampoos and conditioners contain this plant. Indian Gooseberry strengthens the hair follicles, stimulates hair growth, keeps dandruff away, prevents split ends and nourishes your hair. It can also prevent premature graying of hair and stops hair loss. This is in the Peek-a-poo Rainbow forumula for grey or color treated hair.
(other ingredients are glycerin, soy protein, and xantham gum.)
Great results, great ingredients, but what about the smell? Why haven’t I mentioned the smell??
Well the great thing about Skinchanted is they make their product “Naked”, which means it is free of dyes, fragrances, and harsh chemicals. “Darn I wanted a shampoo that smells great too!”
Well you’re in luck! Skinchated offers over 50 scents! You can choose from essential oils or fragrance oils. I chose Lavender Lime essential oil. I have been on a huge Lavender kick lately. I love the relaxing/refreshing scent, mix that with even more refreshing lime scent and the result is amazing!!!! I absolutely love the smell! I love that I can switch it up anytime I reorder the shampoo too!
With scents like White Grapefruit and Ginger, Ylang Ylang, Blackberry, Passion fruit Papaya, and Mango….how will I ever make up my mind again?

You can go into their shop in Atlanta and find the same people who make the products, to be in the store helping you make the best decisions for your skin! They have logs of soap waiting to be cut, scrubs and creams ready to be customized and more!!! They have great looking hair serums that I want to get my hands on too.
You can also order from their website Skinchanted.com They do ship internationally( but it can get pricey maybe you and your friends can do a group order to keep the shipping costs down! )
The shampoo retails for $16.95 for 16 fl. oz., which is pricier than the soap bars I use but it is SO worth it! I can choose my scent, it works great, and I only wash once or twice a week so that bottle would last me a long time.
I hope that you all try this shampoo and that it works out so great for you as it did for me!!!! Hooray for “no poo/shamphree” alternatives that work!
Have you tried Skinchanted before? What did you think about it?
